We called Piece of Cake Moving and got quotes that ranged from $3,900 to $16,645. Read on to see a complete breakdown of our prices.
Distance of Move | Size of Move | Cost |
---|---|---|
CA to TX | 7000 lbs | $11,595.00 |
CA to NY | 3500 lbs | $3,900.00 |
IL to TX | 7000 lbs | $16,745.00 |
For our first move, we asked about a 1000 cubic-foot move from California to Texas and received a quote for $11,595.
Next, we asked about a 500 cubic-foot move from California to New York, which would set us back $3,900.
Finally, we asked about a 1000 cubic-foot move from Illinois to Texas, which would cost $16,745.
We called up Piece of Cake Moving & Storage to see what they could bring to the table, and we took notes on how the entire experience unfolded. Was it a cakewalk, or did it leave a bad taste in our mouths? Read on to find out…
Unlike the majority of movers, Piece of Cake Moving & Storage doesn’t have a robo-menu for you to navigate. Instead, we were put on hold (for less than a minute) before being connected with a real, live human. We were off to a great start – but how did things go from there?
While it was nice not dealing with a robo-menu, our experience with our agent Elena was sadly lacking. We’re not sure what the deal was. Maybe we caught her on an off day, or maybe she was new. Maybe she was the best they could get on short-notice. In any case, you’d think a moving company would want to put their best foot forward to win over prospective customers.
Unfortunately, throughout our call with Elena, she somehow made us feel like we were wasting her time. She sounded bored and disinterested on the phone, and while she was informative enough when we had questions, she never offered any additional information without being prompted.
Sure, Piece of Cake can pull the “We’re from New York, we don’t have time to be nice,” card, but customers can easily pull the “I don’t deal with jerks, I’ll take my money elsewhere,” card. Good communication goes a long way, and we just didn’t feel welcome.
A Note About Quotes:
When we asked Elena to send us emailed quotes for our moves, she told us she was taking down our email address and would send them in just a few minutes. We got our quotes… three hours later. Not a good look.
Elena wasn’t very forthcoming with information, so we had to take some time to dig for info and ask her about what Piece of Cake can offer their customers. The biggest takeaway was that Piece of Cake provides two options for moving: consolidated and direct.
If you book a consolidated move, your stuff gets bundled into a truck with several other moves that need to be picked up and dropped off along the way. It’s cheaper, but it takes longer. On the other hand, if you book a direct move, your stuff gets sent straight to your destination, for an extra fee.
Most moving companies only do consolidated moves, so it’s nice that Piece of Cake provides direct moves as an option – even though they can cost a pretty penny.
As for other services, Piece of Cake does offer packing and boxing, but you’ll need to do a virtual estimate so their moving teams know how many boxes to bring. Fortunately, Piece of Cake provides all the boxing, packing, and stuffing, including reusable wardrobe boxes. They can also provide two weeks of storage at their New York location.
We asked about insurance, and Elena told us that Piece of Cake Moving provides basic coverage: $0.60 per pound of stuff lost, damaged, or destroyed. When we asked about more in-depth coverage, we were told that Piece of Cake typically emails with insurance proposals from the insurance companies they’re partnered with.
If you’re looking for insurance providers for your move, don’t forget to check in with your homeowners or renters insurance provider. Sometimes these policies extend to moving day, so you don’t have to end up spending extra cash.
We weren’t “offered” anything. We had to ask. And we had to ask for every shred of info to make this review – including info on discounts.
We were told that Piece of Cake offers discounts on a case by case basis. They also do price-matching and there’s sometimes discounts based on inventory. Again, this all depends on the nature of your move, when you booked, where you’re going, and whether you somehow won over your sales rep. Clearly, we hadn’t.
Piece of Cake Moving provides direct and consolidated moves, so we asked about both. For all of our direct moves, we’d only be waiting 1-3 days. Consolidated moves got a little trickier.
Because there’s no real telling how many pickups and dropoffs will be on the way for a consolidated move, Piece of Cake offers a moving window. This was between 17 and 24 days, depending on the point of origin and the destination.
Move | Weight | Distance | Duration |
---|---|---|---|
Los Angeles to Austin | ~2,100 pounds (inventory list) | 1,383 miles | 10-20 Days |
Los Angeles to New York City | ~2,100 pounds (inventory list) | 2,799 miles | 10-20 Days |
Chicago to Austin | 3 Bedroom Home (Phone estimate) | 1,120 miles | 2-9 Days |
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what customers are saying about Piece of Cake Moving & Storage around the web:
“Piece of Cake gave me complete piece of mind. Our office building kept throwing monkey wrenches into the move and every step of the way Piece of Cake was able to help find solutions so the move could happen. Everyone is so responsive, kind, and competent. The team did a great job carefully moving our items and making sure everything was to my satisfaction. 100% would recommend and definitely will hire again.”

“I am so thankful for the flexibility and service of Piece of Cake!! We had to move out of our apartment and had a last minute delay with moving into our second place. Piece of Cake was very flexible in allowing us to change dates, add storage services, and more. All of our items were packed with care and everything arrived without damage (not even a scratch)! The prices seemed reasonable, and they also offer military discounts. I highly recommend piece of cake moving services!”

Yes, Piece of Cake Moving & Storage does provide opportunities for discounts, but they’re on a case-by-case basis. To find out if you qualify for any cost-saving options, it’s a good idea to reach out to them directly.
The duration of your move with Piece of Cake Moving & Storage will depend on the distance, the amount of stuff, and any additional requirements. Our moving windows from Piece of Cake ranged from a few days for a direct move to 21 days for a consolidated relocation.
Like other movers, Piece of Cake Moving & Storage is busiest during the summer months. We say this as pure conjecture based on our experience with other movers, since the Piece of Cake sales rep we dealt with wasn’t very forthcoming with information.
Piece of Cake isn’t an insurance company, so they don’t offer insurance beyond the base $0.60 per pound. Instead, they’ll reach out via email and provide some options for partnered insurance companies if you need full coverage.
Piece of Cake doesn’t subcontract their moves. They have an entirely in-house team, so you know who to expect on moving day. This is a definite plus, but maybe they’ll want to subcontract their sales department to someone who actually cares about their job.
Do we recommend Piece of Cake Moving & Storage? Maybe. While it’s great that they’re all in-house, and it’s great that they offer direct moving (if you can afford it), their customer support and communication was a bit lacking.
If you’re in a hurry and you want to get your move over with, give Piece of Cake a call. They’ll get you moved in no time with a direct move – just prepare your wallet in advance and don’t expect much in terms of pleasantries.
